The CarolinasFort Wayne was first constructed in 1794 under the direction of General Anthony Wayne – it was actually built last in a series of forts constructed on what was then the frontier. It was built on the banks of the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Mary’s, and Maumee Rivers and was a major trading post. In 1823, after the construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal, the area exploded and Fort Wayne as a city began to prosper. Railroads came not long after, and today the economy of the city is based on manufacturing, education, insurance, logistics, defense, security and health care.
